Times home renovations went very wrong in the funniest way

Times home renovations went very wrong in the funniest way

We’ve all been there. You go to Ikea and pick out the perfect piece of furniture for your home at a low cost. When you renovate home, however, it’s a whole different story. In order to cut costs, many turn to DIY projects or renovating by themselves. However, things don’t always go to plan. It’s clear that whoever did these renovation projects should’ve spent the extra money in order to hire a professional.

Sink before you reno

Are you shocked about this fail? We didn’t sink so. Pardon the pun but there is nothing funny about this very dangerous renovation fail.

Sink before you reno

We want to know whose great idea it was to place an electric outlet right next to a faucet where water comes out of. When renovating, it’s important to keep in mind possible safety hazards and do your best to avoid them. Everyone should know that water and electricity do not mix and putting them so close together in a room would end in potential disaster.

Futuristic garage

Is this a garage from the future? We ask because only a hover car or flying car from the Jetsons would be able to get inside.

Futuristic garage

The designer of this garage definitely miscalculated the placement of the door, as it’s impossible for a vehicle to pull inside unless it’s levitating. Whoever did this forgot the basic rule of garages, which is keeping your car inside, or Maybe they just mistakenly thought that garages are used for something besides storing vehicles.

Ramp it up

The only positive aspect we can see coming out of these driveways is that in the winter they would be great to go sledding down.

Ramp it up

Other than that there aren’t too many positives about having your driveway and house on a huge hill. That driveway is so steep that it’s almost at a 90 degree angle. You car would likely roll back down the driveway, even with the parking brake on!

Opposites don’t attract

When adding an extension onto a house the first thing that most homeowners explain to their contractors is that they want the extension to match the rest of the house.

Opposites don’t attract

However, this homeowner seems to have purposely told their contractor to make sure the extension DID NOT match. It looks like two random houses were squished together and the results are not pretty. They didn’t even bother painting the new part to attempt to make it match.

Zig zag door

Here is a perfect example of the reason why builders always say measure twice cut once!

Zig zag door

In order to not run into whatever is hanging on that wall, this renovator had to cut around it in order not to disturb the fixture. This led to a door that that looks more like a Tetris piece that the entrance into what looks like a very empty and scary room. We’re all for artistic freedom but doors should be shaped like doors.

Diagonal throne

Who wants a room with clean lines and 90 degree angles when you could put your toilet on an angle?

Diagonal throne

Sitting on the toilet can get kind of boring but maybe turning the commode to the side will make it more interesting for the person sitting on it. We hope this isn’t the guest bathroom but if it is we highly suggest that the homeowners let their guests to use another bathroom lest they be very confused about what is going on with this toilet.

Halfway driveway

We get it. Land is expensive and most homeowners want to use up every inch of space they can get their hands on.

Halfway driveway

However, this homeowner who just want some grass for their kids to play didn’t entirely think their driveway plans through. First of all, unless they want to ruin their grass they won’t be driving up a car on that lawn anytime soon. Secondly, a car won’t even be able to get out of the garage without getting the rear dented from the tree in the way.

Stretch your arms

The only human being that would be able to use this bathroom is the mom from The Incredibles who can stretch her arms out.

Stretch your arms

Unless someone is planning on going to the bathroom in the bathtub and bathing in the toilet, we suggest that this homeowner get a toilet paper holder and put it next to the commode. This setup is just completely dysfunctional and we can’t imagine anyone finding it funny when they are in desperate need of some toilet paper!

Tiny tiles

At first when seeing this photo you might think that both of these floors belong to two different photos.

Tiny tiles

In reality, however, this is in fact one room that is half carpeted and half tiled. The problem with the tiles is that they are cut off but tiny, diagonally cut that throws the entire floor off. This homeowner should sue whoever laid their tile down and if they did it themselves they need to go back to school for carpentry.

Watch your head!

What is this? A house for ants?! This guy isn’t even that tall and his head is hitting ceiling only halfway up the staircase.

Watch your head!

We would hate to have to bend our necks every time we walk up the stairs and this guy doesn’t look too happy about it either. Unless he is willing to get bumps and bruises all over the top of his head, we suggest that this homeowner call his contractor right away and fix that staircase!

Bad lighting

This homeowner might have been trying to save a penny or two by trying to light two rooms at the same time with one light bulb.

Bad lighting

However, we don’t think that lighting up half a room with half a light bulb would actually be very productive. Maybe this homeowner should just knock down that wall if they want to skimp on the light fixtures. Once that light burns out, both rooms will be dark and it looks impossible to change that light bulb.

No privacy

We’re glad this homeowner is an open person and has nothing to hide but this is a little too out there.

No privacy

We don’t quite understand why the person who built this home would place a bathroom right at the entrance but now that it’s there, we suggest they put up some blackout curtains or blinds so that no peeping toms walk by and disturb someone’s personal moment on the throne.

Appetizing

Come down for dinner kids! And if you have to use the bathroom you can still come down for dinner!

Appetizing

Whoever designed this kitchen must have some different views about fine dining than we have. We can’t imagine anyone being comfortable enough with their dinner guests to do their business in front of them but who knows, maybe there are families that are a little too close for comfort. We would gag if anyone used that toilet why we were eating.

Ditch door

After the bricklayer on this job was done putting all of their hard work and sweat into this project was finished, they stood up, took a step back and admired their work.

Ditch door

However, after trying to open the door to get inside, they realized that the bricks they just laid were slightly too high. Not wanting to ruin all their hard work, they dug up this little ditch for the door to fit it.

Marking the territory

Fans are a great and cheap way to cool of a room without having to spring for an air conditioner but a homeowner should make sure that their fan is small enough for the room.

Marking the territory

The blades from this fan got a little too close for comfort to the walls and left some nasty marks that won’t be coming out anytime soon. This room needs a new fan and a new coat of paint

Door not stop

You know those springy things at the bottoms of doors that cats always play with?

Door not stop

Well those are meant to be door stops but this door isn’t getting stopped at all based on the fact that the door stop doesn’t actually reach the wall. The door stop needs to be moved a little to the right in order to serve any purpose at all. But maybe the homeowner just wanted to put it there for their pet cat.

Balcony pole

Either this city was very adamant about having a street light in that exact location or the builder of this apartment building was too stubborn to get rid of their balconies.

Balcony pole

It looks like they made quite the compromise by having the street light stuck straight through both balconies on this building. No residents will be using those balconies any time soon unless they want to put their lives at risk.

Locked in

Whatever is on the other side of that door, whether it’s a bedroom or bathroom will likely never be used since it can’t be accessed by any of the residents in the house.

Locked in

On the plus side, however, not open that door is a great way to save on heating bills. We suggest this homeowner get central heating so they can open that door. And plus, it doesn’t look like that radiator will be heating much.

Wait, what?

This building looks rather old and weathered so it’s understandable as to why the renovator would want to install some new windows to keep out the chill.

Wait, what?

However, the renovator did not take into account that there was already a place for those new windows to go and created a two new and unnecessary holes in this building. What could have been a nice building was turned into a giant mess.

Stair maze

Besides the fact that there is no railing on this staircase which could lead to a potential disaster, we don’t actually think anyone could get up the first flight.

Stair maze

If you wanted to climb up these scary stairs you’d have to hold on for dear life and hang of the edge of the staircase in order to lift yourself up to the next flight. We’ll avoid the stairs and take the elevator thank you very much.

That’s better

That bathroom was pretty open before this designer genius put a glass door in front of it and fixed all of the problems.

That’s better

But in all seriousness, we wish we could get in the mind of the designer who thought that putting a glass door would add any privacy to this very not private bathroom. We have a feeling this bathroom might just be for show because we can’t imagine spending the money on installing a toilet only to have no one use it.

Deck Disaster

Many homeowners want to turn their backyards into their personal oasis where they can chill out and relax.

Deck Disaster

This homeowner attempted to do just that, however, they made a major mess. All they wanted to do was relax in their hot tub but placing an extremely heavy amenity on a rickety deck resulted in what you see here. This must have been a disaster to clean up and it looks like a lot of money went down the drain.

A sink too far

Having two sinks can be a great addition to any kitchen as it offers more space for all of those dirty dishes to pile up.

A sink too far

But if you are intending to put in two sinks, you need a faucet that will reach them both. Unfortunately for this renovator, their second sink has been rendered completely useless since no water can actually reach it. We hope they can find some sort of use for it.

Straw struck

This is one handyman who didn’t want to break the bank in order to fix their faucet.

Straw struck

Instead of heading down to the hardware store and shelling out the cash for a new tap, this homeowner simply looked inside a kitchen cupboard and stuck the first hollow thing they found into the faucet. This straw may be working now but it won’t last for long before they need buy a new tap.

Shower head

Talk about innovative ideas. We can guess that this person is likely a college student that had to figure out how to fix their busted shower head.

Shower head

They may have just walked out into their living room and picked a can someone drank at their party the night before. All they had to do was poke a bunch of holes in the can, duct tape it over the faucet and voila! We hope this person is studying engineering in college.

Leaning tower

This house could be a renovation disaster or it could be an art installation inspired by the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Leaning tower

However, we think it is more likely the former and that this contractor was not inspired by Italian architecture. We can bet that anything you put on a table in this house would slide right off since the floor is on such an angle. If you tilt your head at the right angle this house looks pretty normal.

Keep it closed

We don’t really think keeping this gate locked will do anything for the security of that house.

Keep it closed

The orders on this sign have been obeyed, however, in order to have a functioning gate around the fence. We think that if this homeowner wants to keep intruders out of their home they should either put a fence up or get a security guard because that little sign won’t be keeping anyone off of their property.

Tilt your head

Either this is supposed to be a piece of abstract art or someone didn’t use a level when they were installing this window.

Tilt your head

We hope it’s just the window that’s tilted and not the entire house but we have a feeling that many other things inside this house were not installed correctly. Now that we think of it, they didn’t put in the instillation that well either. Here’s a perfect example of why you should spend the money on a good contractor.

Stairs to nowhere

It looks like this house had a staircase leading up to the door before the homeowner decided to add a ramp instead.

Stairs to nowhere

We guess the renovator wanted to use the stairs as a form of support for the ramp but now it’s just looks like there is a staircase to nowhere. We have to be honest, we would be pretty scared crossing this bridge to get to our front door everyday.

Storage room

This garage is perfect for storing old family, bikes and tool boxes but absolutely not a car.

Storage room

Unless this homeowner wanted to have a dent in their bumper every time they backed out of the driveway we suggest they chop down that tree or get a bus pass. We really want to know what genius though building a driveway around a giant tree was a good idea but we bet their regretting it now.

What even?

When it comes to bathrooms you can have a full bathroom which includes a bathtub or shower or a half bathroom which just includes a commode.

What even?

A half bathroom doesn’t, however, include half a toilet but apparently this homeowner didn’t get the memo. We can’t imagine that this is a functioning bathroom but if it somehow is, we would suggest that no one use it unless they are prepared to fall off the seat.

Squished in

Sometimes if you live in a big city you have to sacrifice space in order to to be able to afford an apartment.

Squished in

We would guess that this bathroom must be in a New York City apartment since there is absolutely no room to be found. We wonder how anyone would be able to do their business on this commode but we think it might involve some flexibility on behalf of the person using the bathroom.

Where’s the roll?

The person who lives in the house must be a master prankster since they seemingly want to leave their guests stranded in the bathroom searching for a roll of toilet paper.

Where’s the roll?

They’d likely be searching for a while before having the presence of mind to find the roll in the cupboard. While the guest was frantically searching the homeowner must have been holding their sides laughing. We would not want to stay over at this house.

No escape

Living in an apartment building can be slightly more dangerous than a house when it comes to fire safety since it can be more difficult can get out of the building.

No escape

That’s why on many buildings there is a fire escape in order for the tenants to be able to get out in case of a fire. However, these residents will have to take a literal leap of faith if they ever need to use the fire escape since it’s missing a giant piece.

Wet floor

In addition to this insane sink, this bathroom includes about 100 “Caution, wet floor” signs warning its users to beware.

Wet floor

We understand why someone would want to install a smaller sink in order to make more space for other things but it needs to be big enough for the faucet to reach. The unfortunate souls who used this sink were probably very surprised to find that more water ended up on their clothes than on their hands.

Open doors

This homeowner must want to know what’s going on in every room of their house since it’s impossible to close the doors.

Open doors

Whoever installed this door knobs needs to go back and flip it around and learn how a door knob works. Maybe this house is in opposite world where door knobs face the wrong way but we think it’s more likely that this renovator just made a big mistake.

Claustrophobic corner

It seems that the renovator of this home put anything with a hinge on it in the same corner of the kitchen.

Claustrophobic corner

We can bet there are a lot of scratch marks on that microwave and door from things constantly banging into one another. We think this kitchen might benefit from a little rearranging just to bring some order to the chaos. On the plus side, at least the fridge looks like it’s stocked with lots of great food.

Step up

This house must belong to someone with very long legs and someone with very short legs who needs a chair in order to reach that door.

Step up

With think this door was placed hire in order not to interfere with the radiator underneath, however, the builder of this house might have been better off just moving the door either to the left or right. Now the homeowner has to jump down and climb up just in order to get to another room of their house.

Duct tape for everything

We’ve all had that favorite clothing item we’ve had to throw out because it had so many holes in it but not for this couch owner.

Duct tape for everything

They are one of those people who think duct tape fixes everything but from this picture we can tell that’s definitely not the case. It’s clear that they weren’t willing to get a new couch – or maybe they were extra willing to prove that they could have it fixed.

Outlet trouble

In yet another display of a lack of reasoning, someone decided it was a great idea to put water right next to an electrical outlet which as we all know is a big no-no.

Outlet trouble

If anyone turns this tap on they better run away as fast as possible since the result of water hitting that outlet would not be pretty. We hope that someone fixes this soon since this could be a potential hazard for an innocent bystander.

Absurd balcony

This could be a very nice balcony, there’s just one problem – there’s no way to get to it.

Absurd balcony

I guess if the house belonged to Spider Man, he would be able to swing down from the upper balcony, but we wouldn’t recommend that for anyone who isn’t a superhero. You might think that someone along the way would have realized that this design is inherently flawed, or noticed that something was missing, say a door, but no, this really happened.

Botched basement

It can be very nice to have a house with a basement. There is extra space for storage or for kids to play, and if it’s a finished basement, it can even be a good room for guests to stay in.

Botched basement

The basement in this house might be very nice inside, but unfortunately there’s just no way to know that – since you can’t get in. The nice wooden stairs lead down, but instead of going to the basement, they simply end at a blank wall. Ouch.

What a view

Everyone wants plenty of windows in their house. They let light in and make the room feel more open and spacious. Not this window, though.

What a view

This window doesn’t seem to do much of anything at all. The poorly thought-out chimney makes sure that there is no way to even see out of the window, and we bet that the room behind it is pretty dark, if there even is a room there. There’s really no way of knowing what else might be going on with this strange house.

Please knock

Good luck getting into this building! Somehow, the door was built several feet above the ground, and there is no way to reach it without a ladder.

Please knock

Judging from the objects in the windows, it looks like there are people living in the building, which begs the question: how do they get in and out? It looks like a pretty obvious problem, and perhaps there are plans in place to build some stairs, but for now, we just hope nobody is stuck inside!

Dysfunctional drawers

If you want to put anything in these drawers, you’ll have to break down a wall. We’ll never understand how things like this happen, but it sure is unfortunate for the owners of this home.

Dysfunctional drawers

They thought they would have a nice amount of drawer space in their kitchen to keep silverware and dishes, but it just didn’t turn out as they had hoped. Maybe the contractor learned their lesson though, and will take some measurements next time.

Trapped

What’s more important: cabinet space or a way out of your house? This contractor just built cabinets right across the door, rendering it completely useless.

Trapped

Was this just a poorly planned room or a terrible mistake? We’ll never know for sure but we do know that it looks completely ridiculous. Best of luck to the person who was hoping to have a nice new kitchen and ended up with this mess. We suggest hiring a new contractor to figure out a solution.

Watch your seat

This is worse than someone leaving the seat up. It’s actually impossible to sit down on this toilet, let alone lift the seat.

Watch your seat

Someone along the way should have realized that there was a problem – but somehow they finished construction and ended up with this result. It looks like a fairly expensive bathroom, complete with marble counters, but none of it matters if it’s so badly constructed that it’s not even useable. There better be another bathroom in this house!

Hope you’re not hungry

Don’t you just hate it when you’re itching for that delicious lasagna you’ve got stored in your fridge, but the darn oven is in the way?

Hope you’re not hungry

This case is simply the result of bad planning. It is really quite easy to avoid something like this happening if you just measure the room and the appliances before you install them. Someone here messed up big time, and we can only imagine that it must be very disappointing (and hungry) to realize you can’t open the refrigerator in your brand new kitchen.

This way up

The only possible explanation we can come up with for why this happened is that the person who installed the door had never actually seen one before.

This way up

Come on, how can anyone get this so wrong? Doors are pretty standard and everyone understands how they work- they swing open and closed, and people can walk in and out of them easily. This door, however, will take some pretty serious gymnastics if anyone is going to use it.

Emergency escape

We hope there’s no emergency in this building, because even though it has an emergency escape, we don’t think it’s going to be particularly useful.

Emergency escape

Somehow, the staircase was installed just a few feet to the side of the doors. Which makes it absolutely impossible to use the stairs and also creates a pretty abrupt and dangerous drop for anyone who happens to walk out those doors. We recommend keeping the doors locked until the problem is fixed!

Not a solution

There wasn’t enough space for a door to open into this bathroom, so someone thought they had the perfect solution: make a cutout in the door to fit around the toilet.

Not a solution

Okay, we understand what they were trying to do, but this very clearly does not work. There’s no way to get inside the bathroom, and even if you do somehow climb over the toilet and manage to close the door, there’s a hole in it, which completely defeats the purpose of even having a door.

Just park on the street

Unless this family has a particularly tiny car, they’re not going to be able to get it into their driveway.

Just park on the street

Someone built a pole right in the middle of their driveway, splitting the end in half. They seem to have missed the point of a driveway – you actually need to be able to drive into it in order for it to work properly. Maybe this family will have to invest in several motorcycles to replace their car.

Next time use a ruler

When you hire someone to build a house, you hope that they know what they’re doing. You trust them with the design, with the measurements, and with the construction.

Next time use a ruler

So when something like this happens, it’s completely mind boggling. The walls simply don’t line up as they’re supposed to. Hopefully it just looks messy and the house itself is structurally sound because it looks like people are living there. We wouldn’t hire the people who built this house, that’s for sure.

Staircase to heaven

This is a nice looking staircase, complete with brick steps and a beautiful hand rail. It looks like a lot of work went into its construction.

Staircase to heaven

Unfortunately, however, it’s completely useless – a staircase that leads up to a yellow wall. Whatever the original intention, it definitely didn’t work out as planned. Maybe there was supposed to be a door there, or maybe they built the stairs in the wrong place; either way, some kind of terrible miscommunication seems to have occurred here.

Honey, I’m home

But there’s no way to get in! The concrete stairs and overhang make a pretty standard entrance for a house, but it’s missing one important thing: the door.

Honey, I’m home

Not only does it look absurd, it’s entirely useless. Even if there is another door for this home, it was a waste of time and effort to build an entrance without putting in the actual door. It looks like the house has been like this for some time, and the reason behind it is a mystery to us.
