Let’s be honest; nobody likes to wake up in the morning – because who wants to leave a toasty and warm bed and go to work? Eugh. So, to enable us to break away from zombie-mode and enter into the world of work-mode, we need a few things to get us ready. Firstly, we need coffee…and lots of it. Then, we need a scalding hot shower to truly wake us up. Lastly, we need a good breakfast. However, there’s nothing worse than realizing you don’t have any cereal left in the pantry. So what do you do? Luckily, there are some easy ways to make some of your favorite cereal at home. Bonus.

Muesli

Okay, so muesli isn’t the yummiest of cereals in the world, but it’s definitely one of the healthiest options – it’s also super easy to make. All you’ll need to make your own cereal is a bag of porridge oats, coconut flakes, almonds (either dehydrated or normal), freshly ground flaxseed, honey and cinnamon. Then, you just need to mix it all into a bowl and stir all of the ingredients together. You can choose to have this breakfast hot or cold, with your choice of milk or water. Et voila!

Corn Flakes

Corn Flakes are one of the most popular breakfast cereals in the world – which isn’t surprising, considering they are so tasty. Luckily for you, homemade Corn Flakes are even tastier! Although they aren’t that difficult to make, it can be slightly fiddly, and requires time and patience (if you have it). For this recipe, you’ll need ground or medium-fine ground corn meal, and either powder sugar or granulated sugar. Firstly, sift your corn meal onto a frying pan and turn on to a medium heat. Next, spray the frying pan and the corn meal with water, so the Corn Flakes are covered and moist. Now, this is the most important bit…do not move or touch the Corn Flakes! Leave them where they are, and let the corn soak up the moisture. Then, sift sugar on top of the flakes and wait until they begin to lift themselves away from the pan. Once they have done that, they’re ready!

Grape Nuts

Grape Nuts are definitely an acquired taste – but we just can’t get enough of this malty, crunchy cereal. However, it’s fair to say the original store-bought version probably isn’t as healthy as the homemade version, so why not try it out yourself? A DIY Grape Nuts recipe will require unsalted butter, whole-wheat flour, graham flour, baking soda, dark brown sugar, fine salt, honey, buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Firstly, sift the baking soda, the brown sugar, all of the flour and the salt into a mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk the vanilla, honey, and buttermilk. Then, mix the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients (this can get pretty messy). Pour the mixture onto a baking sheet and place in the oven until it forms a dry cracker, and then break the cracker into smaller pieces. Team this yummy breakfast cereal with cold milk, and you’re onto a winner.

Cocoa Puffs

We always used to beg our parents to buy us Cocoa Puffs at the store for our breakfast – because chocolate for breakfast was the ultimate dream. More often than not, our requests were denied, and we were given muesli instead, eugh (no offense, muesli). However, we reckon our parents would have been more likely to give us these homemade Cocoa Puffs, which are actually pretty healthy…well, healthier than the store-bought version, anyway. These homemade Cocoa Puffs are made using raw amaranth, almond milk, maple syrup, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, raisins, coconut, and cinnamon. To start with, you’ll need to pop the amaranth and then add in the cocoa powder, the cinnamon, the coconut, and the dried fruit. In a separate bowl, mix the maple syrup, the vanilla extract, and the milk together to create a yummy pouring mixture and enjoy.

Making your own breakfast cereal doesn’t have to be hard – you just have to resist the temptation of buying the store-bought version! Besides, making it yourself is so much more fun…
