Jason Momoa shaved his beard and hearts are broken, but it’s all for a good cause

A bearded legend

What do Khal Drogo, Aquaman, Declan Harp, and Baba Voss all have in common? Well, not only are they some of the coolest cats around, but they are all characters played by the bearded legend, Jason Momoa. Over the years, this Hawaiian actor has taken the world by storm with his rugged physique and his talent on the screen, but he’s also become a leading figure in pop culture. After all, have you ~seen~ his Instagram feed?!

It seems as though his fans (us included) just can’t get enough of his intense climbing videos, his cheeky BTS shots, and the true love he has for his friends and family. Yes, Jason Momoa has stolen all of our hearts at some point or another, but on April 18, 2019, Jason did the unthinkable. The bearded beast shaved off his iconic beard, and we just don’t know how we’ll ever mend our broken hearts. The only saving grace is that it was for a good cause.

A bearded legend

There’s a high chance you’ve heard of Jason Momoa before. After all, he’s one of the most famous men in Hollywood. Although he has been around for much longer than you’d think, the last few years have seen a rise in the “Momoa Effect,” and it seems as though everyone wants a piece of him.

A bearded legend

The Hawaiian actor has put his name to some of the biggest characters to grace our screen, and within many of these roles, he’s been able to maintain a few of his defining characteristics. With his long sea-salty curls and his rugged beard, Momoa has been able to transform himself into underwater superheroes, ancient barbarians, and Dothraki chieftains. However, we’ve now got to say “aloha” to his beard, because this acting legend has shaved it off completely.

Rough and rugged

Did you know that Jason Momoa actually made his acting debut in 1999? His first role came at the turn of the 21st century when he took on the role of Jason Ioane in the action drama series, Baywatch: Hawaii. Yes, before he became the ultimate Hollywood hunk, Jason was able to work alongside some of the other major hunks of the world.

Rough and rugged

He shared the screen with the likes of David Hasselhoff, Jeremy Jackson, Gena Lee Nolin, and Pamela Anderson. After proving his worth on the show, he soon became a leading name in movies and television show. By 2012 he had become the name on everybody’s lips, and he’d grown an impressive mustache and beard to cover his own.

A defining feature

When you look at some of the biggest names in the world of show business, there’s a high chance that most of them have a defining feature that makes them stand out from the crowd. Angelina Jolie is recognized for her plump lips, Jennifer Aniston is known for her ever-changing hairstyle and her anti-aging abilities, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson could be picked out from a crowd thanks to his tattoos, and the list goes on.

A defining feature

It’s safe to say that Jason Momoa can also be included in this list because he’s known for his luscious locks and his long. At least, that’s what he used to be known for. As well as being a defining feature of his own aesthetic, Momoa’s beard also became a defining feature for his characters.

Becoming Khal Drogo

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past eight years, there’s a high chance that you’re familiar with the fantasy drama, Game of Thrones. As arguably the most impressive show to grace our screens for many moons, this show has entertained viewers since episode one.

Becoming Khal Drogo

Although we may now be on the last season, you should still be able to cast your mind back to seasons one and two when Khal Drogo made his rugged entrance. As the love interest of Daenerys Targaryen, Drogo took the crown as the strongest warrior within the Dothraki tribe. Momoa actually grew a beard for his role on the show, and it seems as though he loved it so much he decided to keep it. Of course, he wasn’t the only one who loved it…

Becoming Aquaman

After making his debut as Khal Drogo, Jason Momoa won the hearts of Game of Thrones fans across the globe. While he only appeared in two seasons, this was enough to make a name for himself and prove to the world that he was not only extremely talented at acting, but also extremely talented at growing a beard.

Becoming Aquaman

It seemed as though he didn’t want to get rid of it, and he opted to keep it instead. It became a part of who he was, and it became a part of his subsequent characters – including Aquaman. Momoa took on the role of this underwater superhero in 2016, and his flowing locks and beard seemed to suit the Atlantis vibe perfectly.

Becoming Declan Harp

Of course, the beard life didn’t stop there. As if a DC movie role wasn’t enough, Momoa also became another character in 2016. This was the year that he was asked to become the leading man and the executive producer of his very own television show.

Becoming Declan Harp

Jason stepped into the wild, mysterious, and untamed shoes of Declan Harp as he made his way through the icy frontier. With his fur coats, his clunky walking boots, and his rugged aesthetic, his hair and beard was the perfect fit. It wasn’t going anywhere.

Becoming Baba

As if that wasn’t enough to make you fall in love with Jason Momoa and his beard, his newest role will certainly help you along the way. Although it hasn’t even been written yet, Jason will soon take on the role of Baba Voss in an upcoming drama series for Apple TV+.

Becoming Baba

The show, which will be called See, will take place in the future and show the struggles of society as they have to learn to survive without the ability of sight. With this in mind, we have a feeling that his beard will come in handy. However, as he hasn’t started filming just yet, he may decide to stay cleanly shaven.

The beard and scrunchie

Since making his mark as Khal Drogo, it seems as though Jason Momoa has embraced the beard life. He has grown his hair and his beard to be even longer and more unkempt, but it’s this rugged look that suits a man like him.

The beard and scrunchie

The long-haired actor chooses to wear his hair down for most celebrity appearances, and he did just that when he made his way to the Academy Awards ceremony in 2019. For this occasion, he wore his hair down, and his beard slightly tamed but decided to wear a pink Fendi scrunchie to match his suit. It’s safe to say that the world went wild.

Shaving it off

Because most people have grown to love Jason Momoa and his impressive hair, it’s hard for many to imagine his face without such a feature. However, we don’t need to imagine it any longer – because it’s finally happened!

Shaving it off

This wasn’t just a spur of the moment decision, though. Jason thought long and hard about whether he wanted to shave off his beard or not, and he eventually decided that shaving his beard off would make a stand. He wanted to get his point across, and he wanted to show his support to a canned water company called Ball Corporation.

Bringing awareness

Although his decision has sparked outrage and heartbreak across the world, there’s no doubt about the fact that Jason’s decision came from a good place. He wanted to bring awareness to the fact that most people around the world drink their water from single-use plastic bottles.

Bringing awareness

This plastic is not environmentally friendly and is quickly ruining the planet, and he wasn’t going to sit idly by and watch that happen. He knew that he needed to make a stand and get people talking, and shaving his beard off has done just that!

All about aluminum

This new canned water initiative hopes to rid the world of unnecessary plastics, but don’t worry, because Momoa still wants you to stay hydrated. He has joined the cause to inspire people to drink their water from aluminum cans rather than plastic bottles.

All about aluminum

He wants his friends, family, and followers to “choose cans” that are 100% recyclable. This will not only reduce the amount of plastic waste but also allow us to recycle the materials that are essential to everyday modern life. After all, we all need to drink water, but we don’t need to drink it out of plastic.

All of the facts

If you don’t know already, the world is on the cusp of an epidemic. Although the human race has come on leaps and bounds in the past few decades, it seems as though these actions are having an adverse effect on our planet.

All of the facts

The ice caps are melting, the habitats of animals are being destroyed, and many of these creatures are passing away due to our excessive plastic use. Momoa not only wants us to think about the amount of plastic we throw away each day but also about the alternatives that we can use.

Making a change

When Momoa heard of the impressive work that the canned water company were getting up to, he knew that he had to get involved. He stated that he wanted to shave off the “beast” that was residing on his face because the world needed to change.

Making a change

He wants those at home to know that it’s time to make changes to our habit for the better for the sake of “my kids, your kids, the world.” If he could make the change and shave off the beard that had been a part of him since 2012, others could limit their use of plastic.

Cleaning up our oceans

Alongside this, Momoa also used the special and heart-wrenching moment to talk about other aspects of the mission. He wants to make people aware of what’s going on in our world, and how we are affecting so many aspects of our future, and the future of Earth’s creatures.

Cleaning up our oceans

He wants his followers to join him on “this journey” to “clean up our ocean, our land.” Instead of using plastic and making even more than we can cope with, he wants us to “make the switch to infinitely recyclable aluminum.”

Posting the video

While there’s no doubt about the fact that Momoa’s words will strike a chord with people across the globe, it’s also fair to say that his actions within this video has caused a storm. That’s because the bearded legend decided to take that moment to grab a shaver and shave his beard off there and then.

It’s this action that has caused a media storm, but it’s also this action that has got people talking about his beliefs. Because of this, his decision was definitely worth it. After all, hair can grow back, but the world can’t when it becomes too late.

Not keen on it

Throughout the video, it’s clear to see that Momoa isn’t too keen on shaving off the beard that had become such a big part of his life. He scrunches up his eyes, and he even takes a few deep breaths.

Not keen on it

However, he eventually decides to take the plunge and shave the first batch of hair, because he knew it would be worth it in the end. Sure, he knew his fans and followers (once again, that does include us) would be outraged, but that was exactly the outcome he was after. If he could do something drastic, it would prove the point that something drastic needs to happen.

Not the first time

Within this video, Momoa states that he hasn’t shaved his face since 2012. He took the time to say goodbye to some of his favorite characters that sported the same beard, and he decided to honor his facial hair one last time before it was gone.

Not the first time

However, it might surprise you to learn that this isn’t the first time that Momoa has braved the camera while also being cleanly shaven. In fact, he’s been cleanly shaven more than he has been bearded. He only started to sport such an impressive mound of hair during the height of his career.

His early career

If you cast your mind back to the early days of Jason Momoa, you might be able to remember a young actor who sported a clean-shaven face without a hint of beard in sight. While he has always opted to have luscious and lengthy locks, it seems as though his beard is a much newer addition to his aesthetic.

His early career

With this in mind, it’s surprising to learn just how attached we’ve become to his beard and his facial hair as a whole. Is this because we love him as an actor, or because we have fallen madly in love with the likes of Khal Drogo?

A huge loss

When you think of all of the movies and TV shows that Jason Momoa has been involved in, there’s a high chance that you imagine him with a beard. After all, this beard has since become a part of him and a part of his general reputation within the world of Hollywood.

A huge loss

This is the Jason we see on our screens, this is the Jason we see on social media platforms, and this is the Jason we see on our screensaver. Yes, we’ve all come to know him as Jason with the beard, which means that it’s a huge loss.

Not the only ones

It seems as though we’re not the only ones who think this because it’s safe to say that the video he posted on YouTube and Instagram has caused quite a stir. Many fans can’t control their sadness and their outrage that he would do such a thing.

They have noted that he looks completely different without his facial hair and that he just doesn’t seem like the man they used to know. One Twitter user even noted that “Jason Momoa just shaved his beard off and now nothing makes sense in this world.” We kinda have to agree.

Loving the new look

Of course, there are others who love the new look. They think that the hunky actor still looks incredibly attractive, and looks more like the younger actor they first met in the late ‘90s. Alongside this, they also have to congratulate the actor for taking such a drastic stance on something that is truly going to impact our world.

Loving the new look

While we have been told time and time again by scientists that we need to make changes, sometimes it takes a famous face within popular culture to truly get the message rolling.

The big reveal

So, this is the end result! While this new look has divided opinions and we’re still not quite sure what to make of it, this division is exactly what they wanted from this campaign. Momoa wants to bring to attention the fact that we all need to make changes in our lives, and he has done just that.

The big reveal

He has given up something that was important to him, and many of us believe that plastic is important to us. However, at the end of the day, it’s just something that’s there. It doesn’t define us, and it doesn’t dictate the rest of our lives. So, appreciate recyclable materials, and appreciate Momoa’s new ‘do.
