Both men and women are capable of being narcissists, and there are plenty among us, guys! Understanding the biological and emotional differences between men and women is incredibly important, and helps us figure out how the other gender thinks and acts! There have long been studies and tests carried out to determine the differences between men and women in certain situations.
If you want to find out more, it’s important to make sure you check out how men and women differ. Well, we can look at the differences between male narcissists and female narcissists, who all have a similar makeup, but their motivation is often very different. It’s a fascinating subject, and you can read on to find out more about it below.

What is a narcissist?

Before we understand the differences between male and female narcissists, it’s important to understand what we’re dealing with. And that means looking at what exactly a narcissist is before we actually go any further. A narcissist is someone who shows a long-term pattern of abnormal behavior that generally comes with an elevated sense of self-importance, a need for admiration, and ignoring the feelings of others. Many people can fall into loose parts of the narcissist personality trait, but, when someone is full-on narcissist, you’ll certainly know about it.

What do we know?

It is estimated that, on average, around 6% of the population has some sort of narcissistic disorder. And, we know that the condition is more prevalent among men than women, with 7.7% of men, and 4.8% of women being categorized as narcissistic. However, it is clear that, even among the narcissists, there are differences in behavioral patterns, not to mention motivations. Yes, the personality traits are very similar – a over-inflated, inauthentic sense of worth, coupled with low self-esteem, and high levels of self-preoccupation.

So what are some differences?

Despite having similar personality traits, male and female narcissists tend to differ in quite a few ways. Men, for instance, are said to act as online trolls more often than women do, usually in order to try to make themselves feel better. And, according to Margalis Fjelstad, a marriage and family therapist, male and female narcissists have different things they want to get out of it. Women, for example, tend to be narcissistic about their looks, whereas men are narcissistic about power and wealth.

Why are there more male narcissists?

One of the reasons why there are more male narcissists seems to link to this belief that we as a society still feel men are superior to women, which more men internalize and try to identify with – again, through an over-inflated and fragile sense of worth. In essence, since society is still predominantly patriarchal, this has given rise to a larger number of narcissistic men.
Narcissists will use manipulation to exert control over their partners. They are also preoccupied with money – men are thought to be over-concerned with getting it, and women with spending it.

It’s possible you know someone in your life who is a narcissist, or they may well have a few narcissistic tendencies. Most narcissists are the same, but it is interesting to note the subtle differences in the male and female psyches that lead to subtle narcissistic differences between the two. Now you know a little more about the difference between narcissistic men and women, and you’ll find it much easier to pick them out.
