Have you ever felt as though every move you make and everything you say is analyzed by the rest of the world? Maybe not. While it might sometimes feel as though we’re in the spotlight as we go about our everyday lives, some of us are more watched than others. The Royal Family are some of the many who have grown used to a host of comments about their lives. One of the many topics up for conversation? Their body language.
There have been many new additions to the Royal Family over the years, and many of us can’t wait to take a first look at the new arrival. It appears as though it’s not just the newborns who are being watched. That’s right; some of us are paying close attention to the parents as they make their first grand debut with their babies. Body language experts have compared Meghan and Kate with their new babies, and it seems as though the two Duchesses have a number of differences.
Comparing the Duchesses
Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are both a part of the Royal Family, and joining the Royals means they have become a massive part of many of our lives. Their charity work combined with their personal lives has seen them become talking points of the world.
That’s not all. Many people have been comparing the two Duchesses ever since Meghan joined the family. Although they have many things in common, it appears these women had very different body language with their new babies.
A grand wedding
Kate had been dating Prince William for many years. The pair first met while they were studying at the same university and it wasn’t long until the couple became an item. Kate and William had a brief split when it looked as though they had two different ideas about what they wanted from their relationship. Thankfully, the pair later put their differences aside and have been together ever since.
Kate and William walked down the aisle in April 2011 in one of the most watched events of all time. It’s estimated that around two billion people tuned in from around the world to watch the couple say their “I dos.” To top it off, William is now second in line to the throne, so the Prince is used to having many eyes on him. Marrying Kate was no exception.
The first of many
The couple were married for almost two years before Kensington Palace announced that Kate and William were expecting their first baby. The world didn’t have to wait long to meet the new arrival as Prince George was born in July 2013. There were plenty more to come as Princess Charlotte was later born in May 2015, finally followed by Prince Louis in April 2018.
Unfortunately, Kate’s pregnancies meant the Duchess of Cambridge was offering suffering with extreme morning sickness. Kate was taken to the hospital multiple times and even had to cancel many of her royal engagements as a result. However, the world was there to see her return as Kate stepped out to the sound of a roaring crowd as thousands lined the streets to get a first glimpse of the newborns. Kate and William soon got used to posing with the future rulers of the nation.
Breaking the rules
Meghan Markle has led a very different life to many other members of the Royal Family. She joined the Royals back in May 2018 as she walked down the aisle with Prince Harry in a highly anticipated wedding. However, it appeared as though Meghan was breaking the rules before she said her “I do.” The Duchess was invited to spend Christmas 2017 with the family even though they weren’t married.
Why? Meghan’s family all live in North America as this former actress had grown up across the pond. Apparently, the Royals didn’t want Meghan to be alone at the holidays so invited her to their celebrations. Although they have lived very different lives, it appears as though Meghan has helped to bring lots of new ideas to the table when it comes to bringing the Royal Family into the 21st century.
A new arrival
Meghan and Harry had been married for five months when they had some big news. It turned out they were expecting their first baby, and many couldn’t have been more excited. It wasn’t long before people from all around the world had their eyes on Meghan and Harry. As if that wasn’t enough, the Baby Sussex was about to become one of the most talked about Royals of all time.
It looked like everyone wanted to see the little one for the first time. However, the new parents wanted to announce his arrival in their own way. Meghan gave birth away from the Lindo Wing and didn’t show Archie to the world until two days after his birth in May 2019. As if that wasn’t enough, Meghan and Harry introduced Archie to the world in Windsor Castle to a few members of the press rather than to the public.
Spotting the differences
The two Duchesses have two very different ways of doing things. Kate and Meghan’s style, personalities, and their behavior while out in public have all been questioned over the years. However, there’s more to the story.
Many believe that there are some significant differences in Kate and Meghan’s body language when it comes to how they reacted with their new babies. They might have both been new mothers, but that didn’t mean these two were going to follow the same rules.
Talking with experts
Patti Wood is a leading body language expert who has worked alongside some of the biggest names in the business over the years. Patti has published many books as she aims to educate others on reading people’s body language.
As if that wasn’t enough, Patti often shares her personal views on the body language of the stars and other public figures. The expert watched the footage of Meghan and Harry with baby Archie and soon noticed some unusual things about their body language.
One of the first thing that Patti noticed about Meghan’s interview with the press was that the Duchess kept touching her hair throughout the entire thing. Patti believes this is one of Meghan’s comfort cues that she often uses.
Meghan has been seen touching her hair many times while our in public, but the announcement interview seemed to have the Duchess taking it to the extreme. It appeared as though Meghan couldn’t keep her hands away from her hair.
So what is a comfort cue? Thankfully, Patti has us covered. The body language expert explains that it’s our way of trying to comfort ourselves whenever we feel uncomfortable. This is all thanks to the feeling of a soft touch.
The sensation then sends a message through our nervous system which, in turn, sends calming chemicals to the rest of our body. These messages help to keep up replaced and calm, and it often Meghan’s choice of calming method.
Worrying about appearance
Touching her hair isn’t just a comfort cue, Patti also reports that Meghan is using a form of self-grooming comfort cue. The body language expert believes this means that Meghan is continually worrying about her appearance throughout the interview.
However, everything might not be as it seems. Pattie believes that it indicated Meghan is anxious about showing her baby off to the world in front of all those cameras. There could still be more to it all.
Open to criticism
Meghan Markle has come under a lot of criticism since she has joined the Royal Family. It appears as though not everyone is onboard with the Duchess’ new ideas for the Royals. This has made Meghan pretty vulnerable to the media.
Stepping out in front of the cameras might have caused Meghan to feel as though she was exposing herself to criticism and ridicule. Continually touching her hair could have been Meghan’s way of making sure there was nothing for people to talk about.
Prince Harry first emerged to the media to announce that his son had been welcomed into the world. However, it wasn’t until Meghan and Harry both appeared that the world got to talk to the new parents at the same time.
The interview was very different from how many people imagined. Patti believes that Meghan was quick to initiate the conversations and was more forceful with her replies to any questions. The expert says this shows that Meghan was trying to stay in charge.
Ending the conversation
To top it off, Patti states that Meghan was also quick to end the conversation with the media. It was almost as though there was an urgency to get the interview over as quickly as possible. Patti, and many others, thought Harry would be more in control.
After all, he was born into the Royal Family and has grown used to a life in front of the cameras. Even so, it appeared as though it was Meghan who was stepping up to take control – even though Harry was by her side.
All in his stride
Believe it or not, but it was Prince Harry who walked out holding baby Archie. Holding a newborn for the first time can be a pretty nerve-wracking experience as they are often small and fragile. However, Harry looked at home.
Patti feels that Harry’s grip shows that he is used to holding little ones. Perhaps thanks to his nieces and nephews? Gone is the partying bachelor of the Royal Family as Harry appears to have been replaced by a doting father instead.
Reaching for Archie
Although Harry was the one holding Archie, it appeared as though Meghan wanted to get in on the action. Patti states the Duchess kept reaching over to her newborn and believes that it shows Meghan wanted to be the one with the baby in her arms.
Many moms want to be as close to their babies as possible, and it appeared as though Meghan was no exception. However, it is unusual to see the royal baby in the arms of their father rather than their mother when they meet the world.
Posing for the cameras
Kate and William opted to welcome their children in the Lindo Wing. It has become an unofficial tradition as both Princess Anne and Princess Diana gave birth at the hospital, too. As if that wasn’t enough, the Royals have also been seen posing for photos on the steps of the hospital.
It appears as though Kate and William have got their poses and behavior down as Patti states the couple gave off very different body language to the way that Meghan and Harry showed off their new arrival.
Their own turn
The couple emerged from the hospital with the baby in Kate’s arms before William took his turn posing with their newborn. Both Kate and William got the chance to show off their new baby to the world while the other took in the moment.
Patti feels that passing the baby back and forward to each other was probably choreographed for the media to help make sure that everyone gets the photos they wanted. Thankfully, it seems as though everyone was kept satisfied.
Setting the trend
Princess Diana and Charles are another who have both held their babies on the steps of the Lindo Wing. Diana was the primary person to hold the newborns as the couple posed for photos. However, Charles still has his turn with his baby.
Pattie confessed in an interview with Yahoo that she believes that Charles was holding a newborn William “very awkwardly” when posing for the media. Even so, both parents had their fair share with their babies in front of the cameras.
Showing no pain
Welcoming a baby is often a life-changing moment for many, yet Patti thinks that Kate wasn’t showing any pain when she walked out onto the steps of the Lindo Wing. In fact, the expert believed that Kate was nothing less than graceful and ready for the cameras.
Patti continued to explain that in her opinion, Kate seemed more than comfortable to hand their baby back and forward as she appeared to let William have his turn – unlike Meghan with Archie.
Keeping their distance
Kate and William’s body language has often been analyzed over the years, and many have commented that they often stand pretty far away from one another. There are usually a host of reasons for the distance, and it appears their Lindo photos were no exception.
Plus, the couple weren’t touching each other as much as Meghan and Harry. However, Patti states the couple were in more of an exposed area meaning she didn’t expect anything else as Kate and William were more vulnerable.
Showing her discomfort
The same can’t be said for Meghan. According to Patti, the Duchess of Sussex looked “physically uncomfortable” when she stepped out to greet the world with Harry and Archie. Patti believes it can be seen across her body.
The body language expert states that she could see the tension in Meghan’s face, and her smaller steps showed that Meghan was in a lot of pain. This was very different from the way that Kate has walked from the hospital over the years.
Breaking more traditions
Meghan and Harry will reportedly be breaking many traditions with their newborn. They already skipped the chance to welcome Archie at the Lindo Wing. Plus, they waited two days before they showed their baby to the world.
Could Harry holding Archie have been another way the couple hoped to break traditions? Experts believe this could have been yet another act of rebellion, or the couple’s way of showing the world that Harry will be a significant part of his son’s future.
Feeling the pressure
It’s likely that Prince George will one day rule the nation as he is currently third in line to the throne. This means that Kate and William could have felt more pressure from the public to show off their babies to the world.
After all, all three of their little ones are direct heirs to the throne. The public will probably be a significant part of his life, and many experts believe that posing for the media could be Kate and William’s way of introducing his life to the limelight.
A private life
Harry is further away from being in line to the throne. Searching for an alternative way to announce their arrival could soon become the future of royal baby announcements, especially for those that may never sit on the throne.
It’s believed that Meghan and Harry will lead a more private life than many Royals who have lived before them. This means there could be less of a need to show off their children to the world. Unfortunately, the public don’t seem too impressed with the change.
